New 2016 Lincoln MKC

2016 Lincoln MKC Overview

New/Notable:
  • Compact luxury crossover debuted last year
  • Two EcoBoost engine options
  • New SYNC 3 system available for 2016
The 2016 Lincoln MKC debuted just last year, but already gets a big upgrade with the addition of Lincoln’s next generation SYNC 3 system for the new model year.

SYNC 3, which is offered on Premiere and above trim levels, updates the MKC’s screen and user interface making it easier and more intuitive to use, addressing the biggest complaints about the system. The screen takes cues from tablets/phones, with dedicated icons for the most used functions lining the bottom, and it can now accept pinch to zoom type gestures for easier manipulation of maps with the optional navigation system. Voice recognition has also been simplified and improved, SYNC used to feel a bit underdeveloped as a system but to their credit the engineers and Ford and Lincoln have turned it around.

The MKC is the first vehicle to come from Lincoln’s new line of products which are designed solely by Lincoln and meant to be more distinct from their Ford counterparts. Styling is handsome and familiar, with a large version of Lincoln’s “split-wing” front grille up front, while in the back wide LED taillights spread across the whole of the rear liftgate to provide unique visual flair (especially at night). The whole package looks very cohesive on a crossover, more so than it does on Lincoln’s sedan offerings. 18-inch alloy wheels, roof side rails, and HID headlights with LED accents are all standard. 19- and 20-inch wheels are also available, along with a hands-free liftgate that borrows technology that debuted on the Escape. Simply approach the rear bumper with the key fob on your person, wave a foot under the rear bumper, and it will open or close magically (presto!).

Under the hood, the MKC is powered by one of two available four-cylinder EcoBoost engines. The base engine is shared with a whole handful of other Ford vehicles, and even the Land Rover Evoque. It is a 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 270 pounds-feet of torque. The optional engine will also make its way into the new 2015 Ford Mustang, a 285-hp, turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that makes 305 pounds-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The base engine comes with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is optional on the base engine but standard with the more powerful 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. Fuel economy figures max out with the base engine and FWD, 20/29 mpg city/highway.

The MKC’s cabin is simply styled and free of clutter, with the latest MyLincoln Touch system adorning the center console which thankfully ditches tricky capacitive touch controls for simple physical buttons to control the climate and audio systems. There are plenty of standard features to speak of as well, including dual-zone automatic climate control, powered/heated front seats, push-button/remote start, SYNC, an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, two USB/iPod ports, and satellite radio. Higher trim levels offer “Bridge of Weir” deepsoft leather seats and a panoramic moonroof. The panoramic moonroof is excellent, offering airiness to a cabin that can feel a bit stuffy, especially for taller passengers.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, seven airbags, electronic stability and traction control, and all-disc antilock brakes. There is plenty of available safety technology, including a blind spot warning system, collision warnings with brake support, lane keeping, and cross-traffic alerts. Also optional is an automatic parking system, that not only helps you get into a parallel parking space, but out as well.
